This year’s Open in Leuven, held from 8 till 11 November 2019, presented a novelty, as it was finally evaluated for the FIDE rating, unlike in previous years. This attracted 173 players, among which Europchess’s FM Georgi Tomov and Martin Müller.

Georgi had an excellent performance of 2419, scored 6 out of 7 and finished in second place, behind 14-old Belgian champion IM Daniel Dardha. Strangely enough, the two did not have to play each other during the tournament. Georgi started off well with 4/4, and consolidated with two draws against IM Petre and FM Maerevoet. In the final round he beat WFM Judit Clopes Llahi, who had also been undefeated until then.

Martin performed slightly under his rating level. He collected 4.5/5 against lower-rated players, but lost to FMs Adrian Roos and Helmut Froeyman.
