Europchess 1 misses promotion to Division 1 +++ Europchess 2 finishes last in Division 2 +++ The Francophone Chess Federation’s 2014 Interclubs championship ended with a double disappointment for Europchess’ teams. Already in Round 3, the objectives – promotion for the first team and salvation for the second – got practically out of reach.

Still on a promising 2nd rank, Europchess 1 suffered a set-back. While the tandem Tomov-Hoffmeister disposed easily of their much lower rated opponents of Fontaine 2, Tim Binham and Martin Müller faced stronger resistance from Leuze 1, although by rating they were as well favourites. Both games lasted very long and eventually finished with two surprising losses. Even after this, Europchess 1 could still hope for promotion, provided that four points were scored in the last round, which featured also the encounter with the first placed CE Wavre 2. Martin Müller and Pere Moles scored two points against Fleurus, but unfortunately Georgi Tomov and John Riksten only got draws against Wavre, which thereby clinched first place thanks to a better tie-break over Leuze.

Team 2 was clearly out of shape during this spring. Although ratings suggested that the newly-promoted team could be competitive in many matches, after two rounds it was already under pressure, trailing on the last place in division 2A. Round 3 did not improve the situation: John Riksten, Johannes Bertram and Luis Busquets lost against opponents with comparable or even slightly lower rating. Only Vladymyr Dedobbeleer managed a solid draw. This left Europchess 2 only with very theoretical chances to stay in the division. Alas, also in Round 4, not more than a draw was added to their score, courtesy of Luis Busquets, while Luis Parreira, Dario Maiorani and Vladymyr lost their games.
