Last round of the Interclubs

V for Victory! All three Europchess teams have won in the final round! Tom had White, and his opponent played the Albin Counter-gambit (1 d4 d5  2 c4 e5 !?).  As compensation for his pawn, Black gained a strong knight on d4.  On move 14 Black made the strange decision to retreat this knight, instead of supporting it further by castling queen-side.  After this mistake, Black’s compensation for the pawn disappeared.  Soon after, he...

Round 10 report

Europchess in the pole position before the final round In Division 4 C, Europchess 1 met CREB 2 which was identified as our main contender at the beginning of the season. However, given the advance in match points secured over the previous rounds, the present match was not decisive for the title anymore. Nevertheless,  Europchess lined up a strong team of Tom Wiley, Frank Hoffmeister, Jenő Czuczai and Serge Le Gal. In the first...

Bluff in chess?

It’s important in every chess game to have a plan but it’s also important to know your opponent’s plan. You can guess it if you know the opening theory or you can think about the sequence of previous moves but even body language can be a big help. I call it a bluff when I know what the opponent is going to play and I play something in response which can be really good...

Round 9 report

The first game to finish was Milan Pein against Marcel Van Cauwenberge (1612). In a Bogo-Indian / Catalan mix Black played precise moves (…Bb4+ after which White plays Bd2 and Be7 retreat is the best Black can do) and White was not able to achive any advantage. On move 18 just before a mass exchange of pieces Black offered a draw which looked a reasonable conclusion of the game. 0.5 – 0.5 Mattias on...

Interclubs 8th round results

Europchess 1 Europchess 1 played in Zottegem 2 a hardly fought match. On board 4, Vladymyr Dedobbeleer achieved an opening advantage with White against a Dutch formation. Rather than taking Black’s weakened f5-pawn, he went for a tactical assault on the queenside. Black was, however, able to equalise and got back into the game after the exchange of queens. After further simplifications Vladymyr offered a draw before the time control, which his opponent accepted...

Also it’s a very long tournament, it lasts for over 2 weeks (13 rounds) and every year the strongest grandmasters gather to play quality chess (this year the ELO average was 2720 in group A). But there are two other groups with strong GMs and some young talents...

Interclubs round 7 report

Playing home against the three teams of Epicure, Europchess was able to bring home four important match points. On board one of Europchess 1, we had the pleasure to welcome back Timothy Binham from Finland. In a closed Sicilian, he gained an important space advantage with White against Eric van Hauthem who did not dare castling. Tim increased the pressure with active piece play and finally clinched the full point in the 3rd hour...
